The Bonus of Redonda

Young Bonus lives with his Gran'pa, the "King" of a tiny fishing village on the island of Nevis. Bonus is shy, he sometimes gets bullied at school, but he manages to stay happy, singing his made-up calypsos to himself or his donkey while he helps his Gran'pa and the other villagers bring in the fishing nets. They eat well, they sing loudly, and life is simple.
But when their traditional way of life is threatened by the newfangled ideas of the island's Chief Warden, Gran'pa is not happy. He foolishly engages the help of the local wise woman, Bim Bess, to try and send the Warden packing. But their meddling backfires catastrophically, and Gran'pa and Bonus are forced to flee the village in the dead of night.
Their escape takes them on an adventure through forests, hillside ruins and haunted mansions, to the neighbouring island of Redonda, a mystical, uninhabited place, that Bonus had always dreamed of visiting, and of one day becoming its island king.

While on the run, both Bonus and Gran'pa learn a lot about themselves and about each other. They experience things they never thought they would and visit some amazing places, meeting all kinds of weird and wonderful characters along the way. Bonus grows in confidence, becoming stronger, decisive, and ready to face the world, and Gran'pa finally learns a bit of humility, and then meets Mariposa Heft, who might just turn out to be the Queen that this "King" was looking for all along.
Thanks to some clever thinking from Bonus, (although hampered by yet more foolishness from Gran'pa), they eventually wind up back at their fishing village to face the music. But they have been to the Island of Redonda and lived to tell the tale, and so for Bonus, and for Gran'pa, life will never be the same again.
